Barclays steps back from regulatory Dutch auction
It was pure coincidence that Monday's conference on principles-based regulation by Britain's Financial Services Authority clashed with Barclays' announcement of its agreed takeover of ABN Amro. But implicit in the reversal of the banks' earlier suggestion that the Dutch, not the British, would supply the lead regulator for the combined group is a basic principle that ought to guide any banks toying with a cross-border deal in future: regulation is not a bargaining chip to be traded along with the location of the head office, the number of board seats and the colour of the new logo. Barclays' and ABN's tactics in setting lead supervision by the Dutch as an outline objective of their discussions always looked suspect. The proposal jumped the gun and seemed certain to rile the FSA, which prides itself on being Europe's premier regulator.
Plans to revamp UM field in limbo
OXFORD Ole Miss' plans to expand Oxford-University Stadium have been thrown a curveball after athletic director Pete Boone learned last week the project will cost roughly $6 million more than anticipated. Ole Miss received bids from construction companies interested in renovating and expanding the baseball stadium. Instead of the $10 to $12 million estimated, construction firms placed bids in the range of $18 million. "We thought we were on the high side at $12 million," Boone said Sunday. "That's a big difference. ... I guess surprise would probably be the right word." The discovery comes weeks after Ole Miss announced its stadium expansion plans, which are scheduled to be completed in time for the 2008 season. Ole Miss - along with Jackson-based architects Cooke Douglass Farr Lemons - unveiled plans that would include 880 club-level seats located between first and third base.
Creative ways to split inheritance can reduce friction
The event wasn't set up by an auction house or to benefit a charity. Instead, he was bidding against his two siblings in a private, Web-based auction that they held to divvy up their late father's personal property. Distributing a family's tangible belongings — often mundane knickknacks with far more sentimental value than monetary worth — has long had the potential to ignite family feuds. Divorce and second marriages can add to the tension, as children and stepfamilies vie for valued objects. Now, families and estate planners increasingly are turning to a number of novel strategies, including family auctions and a round-robin selection strategy, to divide tangible property without splitting families apart. Recent online tools also can help family members divide up a parent's belongings.
