Valuable airwaves head for auction
WASHINGTON -- There's about to be a land rush in telecommunications as the U.S. government auctions the only remaining airwaves suitable for nationwide, high-speed wireless Web access. Big telephone and cable companies are jostling alongside Internet and technology entrepreneurs to control the spectrum, estimated to be worth as much as $30 billion. "It's the biggest chunk of spectrum to come back into the public administration in a generation and it's by far the most valuable piece," said Ben Scott, policy director at Free Press, a Washington-based nonprofit focused on communications policy. And it's a hot topic in Washington: House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman John Dingell, a Michigan Democrat, will explore the issues in a hearing Thursday, and the Federal Communications Commission, hoping to schedule the auction this fall, may vote on rules as early as Wednesday, April 25.
PBS kicks off three weekends of auctions
It's that time of the year again, when fundraising for Rocky Mountain PBS - half a century old - is of the auction sort, rather than call-in pledges. Beginning tonight and running through three weekends, the state's Public Broadcasting Service, including the local outlet, KTSC-TV, will televise several hours of auction, bidding for which may be accomplished online as well as on the air. The initial weekend, today through Sunday, will be a statewide event focusing on more than 800 art pieces donated by artists from throughout the state. Up for bidding and buying will be paintings, sculpture, pottery, glass, furniture, jewelry and textiles. People may view the items online at rmpbsAuction.org. Next weekend - April 20-22 - KTSC-TV will broadcast live from the the Pueblo studio, located on the campus of Colorado State University-Pueblo.
Favorable news drives market rise
Stocks advanced broadly Monday, as Wall Street hit the trifecta: an upbeat economic report on retail sales in March, better-than-expected quarterly results from Citigroup and a major going-private takeover announcement. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 108.33 points, to 12,720.46, to surpass its level on Feb. 26, the day before the market sank in a global rout sparked by a sell-off in the Shanghai stock market. All but four of the 30 Dow industrials posted gains, led by Citigroup. The banking giant reported better-than-expected quarterly revenue. Shares rose $1.33, to $52.93. The Standard & Poor's 500 added 15.62, to 1468.47, its highest level in more than six years. The Dow Jones Wilshire 5000, the broadest measure of the U.S. stock market, reached an all-time high.
