Bidding battle expected for Boots

'Boots the Chemist', Alliance Boots, is considering opening up its books to a potential rival bidder to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKT), which has offered £10.2 billion (approximately Rs86,914.2 crore) for the UK-based cosmetics and pharmaceuticals retail leader.

UK's largest investor in private equity and Britain's largest charity, The Wellcome Trust and private equity group Terra Firma, which owns the Odeon and UCI cinema houses, are believed to have asked to see the books of Britain's biggest pharmacy chain, while the German owner of the Lloyds pharmacy chain, Celesio, may also throw its hat in the ring.

Boots will decide by Friday whether to open its books for inspection to Wellcome and Terra Firma.

The company has already opened its books to the potential buyer, which had teamed up with Boots' deputy chairman Stefano Pessina, who already owns 15 per cent of the company and wants to take it private.

Go Shopping Via Reverse Auctions

I've found myself in an interesting and illuminating loop lately. In February, I wrote an article offering some money-saving shopping tips. Good enough, right? Well, I quickly heard from some folks who offered me additional advice, especially about where to find great discounts and coupons online. So I then wrote about how to be a smart online shopper. And then -- you guessed it -- I heard from more folks. So here's my next installment, this time focused on ... (drumroll) reverse auctions.

With traditional auctions, such as you'll find at eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY), buyers bid on items, driving up the price until no one wants to bid anymore or the time runs out. With reverse auctions, an item's price starts out high, and then dropsĀ -- until someone buys it, ideally. This is similar to the "Dutch auction" concept, which Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) used for its IPO.

Former police chief sentenced in theft of horse from auction

Canton resident Dennis L. Meeks found himself in a Holmes County courthouse last week, where he admitted stealing a horse from an auction last year.

As part of a plea agreement where the Holmes County prosecutor dropped felony charges of theft and theft by deception, Meeks earlier pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor theft charge.

In a sentencing hearing Tuesday, Holmes County Common Pleas Judge Thomas White suspended a 90-day jail term for Meeks, 61.

He must pay court costs and $800 in restitution to a Virginia man to whom Meeks later sold the stolen horse.

According to Holmes County Prosecutor Steve Knowling, last July Meeks went to a Mount Hope horse auction, where an Indiana man bought a horse for $800. Without the Indiana mans knowledge, Meeks convinced an auction employee that he was taking the horse on behalf of the winning bidder, Knowling said.

Prize makes Scout cookies better

BAY CITY -- A lucky Girl Scout cookie fan will get a little something extra in a special box of cookies purchased during the Girl Scouts of Mitten Bay second annual "Desserts First" chef competition.

Contest organizers will hide a ruby and diamond ring that Herman Hiss & Co. Jewelers of Bay City donated inside one of the cookie boxes.

The hunt for the jewels is part of the 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday dessert contest at Bay City's DoubleTree Hotel and Conference Center, 1 Wenona Park Place. Mid-Michigan chefs and culinary experts will compete for the People's Choice Award for the best dessert they can concoct with Girl Scout cookies.

The ring and other items donated for both silent and live auctions will help fund the Girl Scouts of Mitten Bay Financial Assistance Program, which sends girls to summer camp and other scouting events.
