Burlco eyes Web auctions

Burlington County plans to join other local governments in auctioning government surplus items on the Web.

The Burlington County Freeholders authorized its treasurer's office to sign an agreement with GovDeals Inc., which operates an Internet auction site called www.govdeals.com.

The freeholders said they will sell vehicles and office equipment to the public online to make more money, save time and attract more bidders.

Sharon Brauckmann, county purchasing agent, said the auction would be held later this year and not until the state Department of Community Affairs gives its approval. She said the state must approve a county application to waive the normal local public auction using an auctioneer.

Kurt Brock, the county's chief financial officer, said the state is approving Internet auctions of government property only on eBay and GovDeals.

FCMC Dinner Auction Nets $25000

Three hundred people packed the Hustontown Firehall on Saturday, April 14, for dinner and a chance to bid on more than three hundred silent and traditional auction items, all to benefit FCMC’s new facility currently under construction.

Those honored during the evening for their support and commitment over the past five years were Bonnie Mellott-Keefer, Helen Overly, Lyle Reed, Julia Dovey and the Hustontown Firehall and Ladies Auxiliary. Thanks to their efforts as well as everyone who attended the dinner auction each year, over $100,000 has been raised from this event alone for the new building project.

Helping to make this year’s event a success was the addition of a gold sponsor. EMBARQ was the proud sponsor of this year’s auction, giving financial assistance to cover expenses, providing an auction item and supplying 30 door prizes of free phone cards for the lucky winners.

McCOY BIDS TO BREAK GRAND NATIONAL DUCK

Tony McCoy has smashed virtually every record in the book in what has been a brilliant career. But there is one glaring omission from his otherwise glittering CV - a win in the John Smith's Grand National at Aintree.

The perennial champion jockey will try to put that right at the 12th attempt on Saturday when he partners the Francois Doumen-trained L'Ami.

Third is the best McCoy has managed so far and he said philosophically: "If it happens, it happens, and if it doesn't, it doesn't.

"The National is a unique race and however good a jockey you are - and there have been better than me - unless you have the right horse, you won't win.

"It would be great if L'Ami could do it and he certainly has the class. His best run was when finishing second to Kauto Star in a small field in the Aon Chase at Newbury, and I was disappointed with his run in the Gold Cup (where he finished seventh).

SGPC seeks to bring back Guru Govind Singh’s plume

CHANDIGARH, April 21: The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) has now decided to bring kalgi (plume) of Guru Gobind Singh, which was taken away by Lord Dalhousie to the Albert Museum of London after annexation of Punjab into British empire. According to SGPC chief Mr Avtar Singh, SGPC is making personal efforts to get back the kalgi of Guru Gobind Singh, sacred to every Sikh. Earlier, the SGPC had drawn flak from the Sikh Sangat for participating in the auction of the 150-year-old bust of Maharaja Duleep Singh in the UK which was later dropped. The SGPC chief has also written a letter to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, and asked him to help SGPC get back the kalgi from England. On the other hand, the name of the person who had purchased the bust of Maharaja Duleep Singh for Rs 14.45 crore during the auction in Bonhams on 19 April has been kept secret for security reasons.
