Bidders fail to tune in to Chrysalis auction
Chrysalis' efforts to auction its radio assets have started slowly after yesterday's deadline for first round bids passed with a muted response. Analysts say that if the sale process continues to struggle it could raise doubts over the efforts of rival SMG to attempt a £100m summer flotation of Virgin Radio. SMG's announcement earlier this month was seen as an attempt to flush out buyers for Virgin Radio with former owner Sir Richard Branson seen as a possible favourite. .
Visalia to seek bids for new software
City leaders poised to spend millions on a new 911 communications center want to make sure Visalia is not getting gouged on upgraded computer software for police and fire services.City Council members rejected a proposal by staff members to declare Public Safety Systems Inc., whose software the city now uses, a "sole source" vendor -- a designation that would enable the city to award a contract without bids from other companies.Mike Allen, Visalia's information-services manager, said upgraded software is one part of an overall public safety communications master plan that also includes replacing or upgrading mobile computer terminals in Visalia's police patrol cars and providing new laptop computers for the city's fire engines. The upgrades would enable features for officers and firefighters such as automatic vehicle location, mobile mapping and document retrieval.Allen said the city has used PSSI's software for about 25 years."Certainly it's been a system that's worked for us," Police Chief Bob Carden said.

Chuckwagon bids mirror Albertan citizens' flair for spending
CALGARY (CP) - The first big event of this city's renown boot-stompin' Stampede, the annual chuckwagon canvas auction, blew out of the gate, raising a record-smashing $4 million. The total - money spent to get your company name on a chuckwagon - is a 40 per cent jump from last year and another sign of Alberta's raging hot economy and its citizens' flair for spending. "It's beyond anything we could of expected," Scott Postlewaite, Stampede chuckwagon committee chair said, above the noise of the auction crowd. "It's unbelievable." Expect excess could be Alberta's new motto, where petrodollars fund a just-announced record $33.1-billion provincial budget, and the strongest retail market in the country. And in a province which leads national economic growth, and a city with a $60 billion gross domestic product, shelling out $205,000 to get your corporate logo on a chuckwagon canvas just seems to make sense.
