Overstock.com Lowers Auction Fees, Delays New-Feature Launch

Overstock.com will lower listing and commission fees for online-auction sellers effective April 10, 2007. The head of Overstock.com Auctions Meghan Tuohig also announced on discussion boards the launch of 1-day auctions and the delay of the long-promised bid cancellation feature and Classifieds.

Listing fee decreases range from zero to 7 cents, depending on the starting price. For example, for items with a starting price of less than one dollar, listing fees will go from 17 cents to 10 cents. Closing (commission) fees will also be lowered, with the first tier commission (for items selling for between one cent and $25) going from 3.25 percent to 3 percent.

When Overstock.com launched its Auctions platform in September 2004, online-auction sellers in some categories hoped they could migrate their businesses from eBay to Overstock Auctions.

Emotional Aish bids

Mumbai, April 21: It was an emotional moment for Aishwarya Rai today as she bid farewell to her parents and relatives to embark on her new life as a member of one of India's most iconic families.

Clad in a cream-coloured lehenga, Aishwarya cried as she hugged mother Brinda Rai during the 'bidaai' (traditional farewell) from her residence La Merin in suburban Bandra. Aishwarya and Abhishekh Bachchan had tied the nuptial knot here yesterday.

"Obviously every daughter gets emotional when she bids goodbye to the house in which she is brought up in but there is also sense of happiness that she is going to a man whom she loved," said the actress' business manager Hari Singh.

Aishwarya came into a traditional 'doli' (palanquin) till the gate of the building from where the star couple moved on into a decorated car to escape the prying eyes of the media.

Capitalism and breast milk

Just as I'm wrapping up my day, I decided to take a quick look at some stories getting a lot of hits. A story that posted recently on azcentral.com about mommies selling breast milk online to men is getting quite the curiosity readers.

Stories about breast milk auctions have circulated since 2005, and lactation groups are quick to advise against buying it.

This has nothing to do with auctions, but when I was looking on the Web for info on breast milk sales, I came across an article about one Los Angeles-area company, Prolacta Bioscience. The company found a way to commercialize breast milk for the benefit of critically-ill and premature infants in the neonatal intensive care.

What do you think?

Pennsylvania Latest Battleground in eBay Consignment-Sales Regulation

Barry Fallon, who operates an iSold It store in Pennsylvania, says regulators in his state are forcing him to get an auctioneer's license to operate his eBay drop-off store. "To get a license in PA requires training and a one year apprenticeship before we can open a store," Fallon said. "So if they succeed, we will all have to close our doors for a year or pay someone with a license to oversee the operation."

When asked about Pennylvania's apparent attempts to require eBay drop-off stores to have an auctioneer's license, eBay spokesperson Catherine England said in an email:

eBay believes that Pennsylvania law is pretty clear and that trading assistants are generally not subject to the state's auctioneering regulations. We have been in contact with state regulators but they continue their enforcement actions against some sellers.
