Oil Futures Bidding To Heat Up As Energy Crisis Looms

Oil ended 2006 roughly where it began, at just over $60 a barrel. This reassured the public that all talk about Peak Oil was hysterical blather from a lunatic fringe. It was reinforced by the publication of the mendacious Cambridge Energy Research Associates (CERA) report issued this fall - a tragic document put out by a giant public relations firm representing the oil industry - with the mission of staving off windfall profits taxes and other regulatory moves that a true resource emergency might recommend.

But beyond this debate, in the background, another ominous trend can account for the stalling of oil prices in 2006 - totally unrecognized by the public and ignored by the news media: Prices on the oil futures market leveled off because the Third World has effectively dropped out of bidding for it - and using it.

Bidding farewell to a great place to

Wow, this is really hard to write. I knew how invested I was in this community and in this paper, but I didn't know it would be this hard to say goodbye.

It seems like only yesterday that Peter Starren called me into his office to offer me this job.

It was the start of the most exhilarating chapter in my long career. I was equally scared and excited about coming to the The Record-Courier, but things really didn't gel until I got my "Dream Team" all in place.

Being able to work with the likes of Kurt Hildebrand, Joanna Reeves, Alice Price and Tony King, along with the wonderful people that make up the rest of The Record-Courier staff has been my greatest joy and I will miss them all more than they know.

It's very rare in this business to work with a whole group of people that has the same love of their community and their paper as you do.

Music event will benefit base's care programs

A fund-raiser will be held April 28 to support the operation of two compassionate care facilities at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, where military families can stay while a loved one is undergoing treatment at the medical center.

The event — which carries the theme "A Rockin' American Bandstand" — starts at 6 p.m. at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force and will feature 1950s, 60's and 70's dance tunes spun by a disc jockey.

Endesa and Iberdrola open electricity auctions to rivals

MADRID: Endesa and Iberdrola, the two largest Spanish power producers, said Thursday they would jointly auction power for delivery starting in July, letting banks and foreign utilities gain a foothold in the Spanish market.

The two will together sell 14.9 terawatt hours of electricity in a two-year period starting July 1, Iberdrola, based in Bilbao, said in a statement.

The Spanish government is forcing the largest utilities to sell wholesale power to increase competition and trading. The sales, known as Virtual Power Plant auctions, allow rival European utilities, including E.ON of Germany, and banks like Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria access to power even though they have no plants of their own in Spain.

The electricity will be sold in periods of three, six and 12 months for full-day supply or peak-demand, Iberdrola said.
